Handyman jobs: furniture assembly, mounting and small repairs

Every week somebody in Switzerland buys a wardrobe they cannot build, a TV they cannot mount or a flat that needs painting before handover. If you are good with tools, this is the category with the highest hourly rates on Werkara — and the one where a single client often comes back three or four times.

Werkara tasker assembling a wardrobe with a cordless drill in a sunlit Swiss flat

What the work looks like

These are the jobs clients ask for most often in this category.

Furniture assembly

Flat-pack wardrobes, beds, kitchens and office furniture. The single most requested handyman job — bring a cordless drill and you are in business.

Mounting and fixing

TVs on walls, shelves, curtain rails, mirrors, child safety fittings. Quick jobs, often booked the same day, easy to combine several in one afternoon.

Painting and renovation

Painting rooms, filling holes, refreshing a flat before a handover. Half-day and full-day jobs with a clear fixed price.

Small repairs

Doors that stick, silicone joints, dripping taps, replacing fittings. The classic "everything else" job that no company wants to send a van for.

What you can earn

You set your own price and agree it directly with the client — Werkara takes no fee until the end of October 2026, then 9 %. The figures below are usual market rates in Switzerland, not a Werkara tariff.

Job Usual rate
Furniture assembly CHF 40–60 / hour
Mounting a TV or shelves CHF 80–150 per job
Painting (per room) CHF 350–700
Small repairs CHF 45–65 / hour

Guide values. Rates are higher in Zurich, Zug and Geneva than in rural regions, and higher for evening, weekend and short-notice work. Income from tasks is taxable — see our article on tax and AHV.

Who we are looking for

Your own tools

Cordless drill, level, screwdrivers, ladder. Clients expect you to arrive ready to work — list your equipment in your profile, it wins jobs.

Experience, not diplomas

Most of this work is unregulated. If you have a trade qualification, upload it: verified craftspeople get chosen faster and can charge more.

Know where to stop

Anything wired into the electrical system, gas, or suspected asbestos in pre-1990 buildings is off limits without the right permit. Saying so builds trust.

How it works

Good to know before your first task

Plug-in appliances are fine — a washing machine or dishwasher with a plug, a lamp with a plug. Fixed connections (a 400 V cooker or oven), work in the fuse box, new circuits and any installation in someone else’s home require a permit under the Low Voltage Installation Ordinance (NIV). Water and gas installations need a concession from the local utility; asbestos work only by SUVA-recognised firms.

More detail: which work needs a permit in Switzerland · tax, AHV and insurance for freelancers. Werkara is a platform, not an authority — the binding answer always comes from the responsible cantonal office.

Frequently asked questions

What do handyman jobs pay in Switzerland?

You set your own price. Furniture assembly and small repairs are typically CHF 40 to 60 an hour; mounting a TV is often quoted as a fixed CHF 80 to 150 per job, and painting a room CHF 350 to 700. Rates in Zurich, Zug and Geneva tend to sit at the upper end.

Can I connect a washing machine or an oven?

A washing machine or dishwasher with a plug: yes, that is a plug-in appliance. A cooker or oven with a fixed 400 V connection: no. Fixed connections, fuse-box work and new circuits may only be done by a professional with an NIV permit — see our article on permits.

Do I need my own tools?

Yes, for most jobs. A cordless drill, screwdriver set, spirit level and a ladder cover the majority of assembly and mounting work. List what you own in your profile — clients filter by it.

Do I need a trade qualification?

No. Assembly, mounting, painting and small repairs are not regulated trades in Switzerland. If you hold a qualification, upload it under Certificates: it is visible to clients before they choose and lets you charge more.

How quickly can I get the first job?

It depends on your region and what you offer — new tasks appear fastest in Zurich, Basel, Bern, Geneva, Lausanne, Lucerne and St. Gallen. A complete profile with a photo, a clear list of tools and finished verification gets requested noticeably more often.
