Tutoring jobs across Switzerland — in person or online
Swiss school pressure peaks twice a year, and parents look for a real person rather than an agency. If you are confident in maths, a language or an instrument, tutoring is the highest-paid category per hour on Werkara — and the one you can do entirely from your desk if you prefer.

What the work looks like
These are the jobs clients ask for most often in this category.
School subjects
Maths, German, French, English, physics and chemistry from primary through Gymnasium. Weekly lessons that run for a whole term.
Exam preparation
Gymi-Prüfung, Matura, apprenticeship entry tests, university exams. Intensive blocks over a few weeks and the best-paid work in the category.
Languages
English, German and French conversation and grammar — for schoolchildren, for adults, and for internationals learning the local language.
Music and other skills
Piano, guitar, singing, and anything else you can teach one to one: chess, coding, drawing, exam technique.
What you can earn
You set your own price and agree it directly with the client — Werkara takes no fee until the end of October 2026, then 9 %. The figures below are usual market rates in Switzerland, not a Werkara tariff.
| Job | Usual rate |
|---|---|
| Primary school | CHF 30–45 / hour |
| Secondary / Gymnasium | CHF 40–60 / hour |
| Exam preparation | CHF 50–80 / hour |
| Music lessons | CHF 45–70 / hour |
Guide values. Rates are higher in Zurich, Zug and Geneva than in rural regions, and higher for evening, weekend and short-notice work. Income from tasks is taxable — see our article on tax and AHV.
Who we are looking for
Know your subject, not necessarily a teaching diploma
Students, graduates and native speakers make excellent tutors. A diploma helps, and if you have one, upload it — but it is not required.
Online works well here
This is the one category that does not depend on where you live. Online lessons open up clients across all of Switzerland, and evenings are the busiest slot.
Patience with children and their parents
Most bookings are made by a parent who is worried about a report card. Clear feedback after each lesson is what turns one booking into a term.

Good to know before your first task
Private tutoring needs no permit. The boundary sits at childcare: regularly looking after children under 12 outside their own household for payment falls under the Foster Care Ordinance (PAVO) and requires notification or a permit from the cantonal authority. Driving instruction is separately regulated and needs a federal certificate.
More detail: which work needs a permit in Switzerland · tax, AHV and insurance for freelancers. Werkara is a platform, not an authority — the binding answer always comes from the responsible cantonal office.
Frequently asked questions
What do private tutors earn in Switzerland?
You set your own rate. Primary school lessons are commonly CHF 30 to 45 an hour, secondary and Gymnasium CHF 40 to 60, and intensive exam preparation CHF 50 to 80. Rates are highest in Zurich, Zug and Geneva and for scarce subjects such as maths and physics.
Do I need a teaching qualification?
No. Students, graduates, native speakers and professionals tutor successfully on Werkara. What convinces parents is a clear profile explaining which subjects and levels you cover, plus reviews. Any diploma you do hold can be uploaded and shown to clients.
Can I teach online only?
Yes, and many tutors do. Online lessons remove the travel time and let you take students anywhere in Switzerland. State it clearly in your profile — parents filter for it, especially for exam preparation.
Is tutoring good work alongside studying?
It is the classic student job: lessons happen after school hours and in the evening, exactly when you are free, and you already know the curriculum. There is no minimum number of lessons and you can pause during your own exam period.
Do I need to speak German to tutor in Switzerland?
Not necessarily. English tutoring for both children and adults is in constant demand, and international families in Zurich, Zug, Basel and Geneva often prefer lessons in English. For local school subjects, the language of the school matters more than your own first language.
